Contribution of Asteroid Generated Tsunami to the Impact Hazard

چکیده

The long-standing uncertainty about the importance of asteroid-generated tsunami was addressed at a workshop in August 2016, co-sponsored by NASA and NOAA. Experts from NASA (Ames, JPL), NOAA, DoE (LLNL, SNL, LANL), DHS, FEMA, and academia addressed the hazard of tsunami created by asteroid impacts, focusing primarily on impacting NEAs with diameter <250m. Participants jointly identified key issues and shared information for nearly a year to coordinate their results for discussion at the workshop and to understand differences in the results obtained with different simulation codes. They used modern computational tools to examine 1) Near-field wave generation by the impact; 2) Long-distance wave propagation; 3) Damage from coastal run-up and inundation, and associated hazard. The workshop resulted in broad consensus that the asteroid impact tsunami threat is not as great as previously thought. See website https://tsunamiworkshop.arc.nasa.gov/workshop2016/

A Quantitative Assessment of the Human and Economic Hazard from Impact-generated Tsunami

In this article, we assess the human and economic hazard posed by tsunami waves generated from impacts of sub-2 km diameter asteroids. Annually, on average, 182(+197/)123) people will be affected by impact-induced waves with a corresponding infrastructure loss of $18(+20/)12)M/y. Half of the tsunami hazard stems from impactors with diameters less than 300 m. One near Earth asteroid will survive...

Asteroid Impact Tsunami: A Probabilistic Hazard Assessment

We investigate the generation, propagation, and probabilistic hazard of tsunami spawned by oceanic asteroid impacts. The process first links the depth and diameter of parabolic impact cavities to asteroid density, radius, and impact velocity by means of elementary energy arguments and crater scaling rules. Then, linear tsunami theory illustrates how these transient cavities evolve into vertical...

A more realistic assessment of beach effects of 2880 March 16 asteroid impact tsunami

Eight years ago, some scientists computed for a 1.1-km diameter asteroid (1950 DA) a 0.0 to 0.3 per cent probability for colliding with Earth. Not long after this, a quasi-analytic model for wave propagation was used to describe the dynamics of the tsunami generated by the asteroid impact somewhere at 600 km east of the U.S. coast. Starting from the same initial conditions, our paper resumes th...

Asteroid impact effects and their immediate hazards for human populations

A set of 50,000 artificial Earth impacting asteroids was used to obtain, for the first time, information about the dominance of individual impact effects such as wind blast, overpressure shock, thermal radiation, cratering, seismic shaking, ejecta deposition, and tsunami for the loss of human life during an impact event for impactor sizes between 15 and 400m and how the dominance of impact effe...
